ARTery Arts and Health Society evolved into a not-for-profit organization after freelance work, research and international development spanning 20 years. We serve inpatients and outpatients of all ages, families, visitors, and those in need of community healing throughout British Columbia and internationally. Our focus is to transform the healthcare experience together through the arts. We facilitate workshops and activities in the visual and performing arts and support those transitioning from child to adult care.
Sarah Dobbs, Founder/Executive & Artistic Director
Sarah Dobbs has been an arts and health program facilitator and consultant internationally for 20 years. She has spearheaded programs in spasticity clinics, with children and youth with disabilities, at-risk youth, and with adult patients in neurology, cardiology, general medicine, and dialysis. She has designed intergenerational projects and worked with dementia patients. She has worked with victims of gender-based violence in Kenya, Uganda and Sri Lanka in communities healing from war and natural disaster. Her work is interactive, knowledge-driven and culturally sensitive, connecting people with ideas aimed at sustainable outcomes.
She returned to Vancouver in 2014. She is also a freelance writer and has been published in newspapers and magazines internationally.
Kate Castelo, Director
Kate Castelo brings a depth of experience working at the nexus of communications, health, and education. She helped establish the non-profit organization, CanHealth International which designs and brings virtual international medical education programs to developing nations, and most recently she served as the communications liaison for the Doctors of BC and the provincial government on a program that served as the launch pad to restructure the primary care system in British Columbia.
We work with a range of artists who work in different media and, in some instances, specialists with particular populations.
